Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Nigeria is home to a rich array of languages, many of which face the threat of extinction due to factors such as urbanization, globalization, and the dominance of major languages. Sokoto State, located in the northwestern part of Nigeria, is home to various indigenous languages, including Hausa, Fulfulde, and other smaller ethnic languages. With the rise of digital media, these languages now have an opportunity for preservation and revitalization through online platforms, social media, and digital content creation. According to studies by Aliyu and Oloyede (2024), digital media has been instrumental in promoting language diversity by facilitating the creation and dissemination of content in local languages, which helps to maintain cultural identity. This study aims to investigate the impact of digital media on language diversity in Sokoto South Local Government Area, focusing on how digital platforms are contributing to the preservation and promotion of local languages.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While digital media has the potential to contribute positively to the preservation of indigenous languages, its impact on language diversity in Sokoto South Local Government Area remains under-researched. Many local languages face the risk of fading into obscurity as younger generations adopt more widely spoken languages such as English and Hausa. This study seeks to explore how digital media can play a role in revitalizing and preserving the linguistic heritage of Sokoto South.
